It is becoming more and more popular to buy cars from car auctions these days. In search of the best deal you can get many people turn to auctions. Where do these vehicles come from? A lot of them are bank repossessions, off lease vehicles, insurance companies also write cars off if repair is too expensive. Whether it's theft recovery or simply too expensive to repair car accident.

So what are some of key things to look for when attending a car auction. Find out what day of the week the auction is on. Usually you will be allowed in the lot the day before the event to "look around". This is where you window shop for that dream car. Make sure to take lots of notes, including make, model, mileage, color, any defects, bidding starting price and all pluses and minuses about the car.

Some lots will also let you start the vehicle and take it for a short spin, usually this is on their property only and it is not a usual road test drive. It is only meant to give you an idea that the vehicle is fully operational. Although you will not be able to go on the highway and get the feeling of how the car runs be sure to ask the organizers of the auction what their policies are and if the vehicle is still covered under manufacturers warranty.

For more info please visit our directory and search for auctions in your province.

Also make sure you visit Ontario's Ministry of Transportation web site for vehicles to be auctioned by the government. Another great place to visit is Manheim's site, they offer car auctions all over the world. They also have locations in Lower Sackville (Nova Scotia), Bowmanville (Ontario) and Milton (Ontario).

Comment: What are the canadian laws and regulations for bringing cars from the us? I am thinking of attending car auctions in the us. Are there regulations for which vehicles I am allowed or dissallowed to bring in to Canada? Where can I get a list of cars that are allowed to bring to Canada?

From: Chris, Vancouver (8/6/2006 1:41:16 PM)
Comment: Norbert, some of these are open to public, however, most of them require that you have a dealer license if you wish to buy

Comment: When buying a car at the auction, what are my payments option? Can I get a lease, any kind of loan for monthly payments or is it a strict full payment only? Also, what kind of guarantee do I get from an auction that the car will work?

Comment: I would like to go to the ADESA Toronto Auction. What do I need to bring and do I need a dealer lincense???

  From: Dan (6/7/2007 5:12:44 PM)
Comment: Give them a call at 905-790-7653 or 800-675-2886 and ask, I think you have to be a licensed dealer. I know of dealers who take public to auctions, you take a look around before the day of the auction and they buy the car for you.

Comment: get the list from the ministry of transport, there’s a few things that may need to be modified on the cars u bring back from the usa, 1, child tether , daytime running lights must be installed if not present on vehicles, and bumper must meet Canadian crash test std's, pretty simple, you pay duty on the purchase price when you cross the border if you declare it there when you bring it across, if you have the title for the vehicle and bill of sale you can put Canadian plates on it and not even worry about declaring it if you want ,just drive it across like you drove it down there and don't mention it, otherwise get the number from

Comment: Usually u buy as is, and sometimes there’s arbitration offered on vehicles over a certain price ex.2000$'s usually, this lasts for 24 hours and normally counts towards motor and transmission only, things the auctioneer would normally have stated when selling the vehicle, u can obtain financing various ways before the sale through private co. , or your bank ,some auctions offer it depending on your credit, normally the discount at the auction sales comes from you paying and having the cash to buy any cars you desire, normally these sales are a vehicle clearance outlet for dealers wishing to dump off their high mile trade-in's

Comment: Does anyone know the name of a dealer who will take the public to auction?

  From: Jason (3/25/2010 5:10:23 AM)
Comment: Tmaimba, why wouldn't children be allowed? Jane, call around in your neighbourhood, there are dealers that will take you to the auction, let you walk around the lot, test drive some vehicles, you decide which one you like, set your max bid and they do the bidding on your behalf, for a fee of course
