In the world of constantly rising cost of gasoline, hydrogen is one of our top fuel alternatives. There are already hydrogen powered cars available on the road, however industry is still working on this project to make it more available to the public. There are ways of converting your vehicle but it is still very impractical. Some petroleum companies are also fighting this idea, but most do support it as it is clean fuel.

Is hydrogen more dangerous than natural gas or propane? Like any other combustible gas hydrogen is flammable. Big advantage that it has over other gasses it is very light.

Car manufacturers are also following this technology and have stated that the following will be available to public:
BMW - year 2008
GM - year 2012
Honda - year 2008
Mazda - year 2008

We'll keep an eye on this as these dates do not seem real at all.

Advantages of converting your car to run on hydrogen:
- no emissions, you could run hydrogen powered engine in your living room.

Disadvantages:
- cost, hydrogen is still way more expensive than gas. It is believed that once scientists refine the technology pricing of hydrogen, fuel cells and all necessary components will drop.
- fuel cell cost. Fuel cells are still too expensive.
- No gas stations are equipped to fill up your car
- Cars don't have enough room to store hydrogen to get an adequate distance range.

Hydrogen (hydrogène)
was named by Antoine Lavoisier
in 1783

Hydrogen liquifies at -423F

1 proton
1 electron
0 neutrons

This is the latest in fuel cell technology. You can buy a hydrogen fuel cell powered car toy for $40 from Horizon Fuel Cell Technologies. The car uses a real fuel cell and its own on-board hydrogen storage system.

You can also buy this fueling station for $40 to create free hydrogen fuel at the flick of a button.

Comment: Once the hydrogen car is available I wonder what the pricing will be like. Look at the hybrids, they are more expensive than regular cars.

Comment: I watched mythbusters on discovery channel where they tried to make a home made hydrogen cell, it turned out it was pretty hard to do on your own. Are hydrogen cars available to buy yet?

Comment: BMW talked about releasing a Hydrogene serie 7 model in February 2008 (in one month). But they talked about this back in 2006 so i wonder if its really coming out.

Comment: go to youtube look up "water car", water has hydrogen, run your car off water. Make hydrogen cheaply from a 9 v battery, look up raviwfc on youtube.

Comment: Hey I also have heard about it by looking around. and like you said Chunk Ahoy, there is actually a video showing the bmw driving on water, view site at http://www.bmw.com/com/en/insights/technology/efficient_dynamics/phase_2/clean_energy/bmw_hydrogen_7.html

Comment: i heard a hydrogen powered car would never run out of fuel and BMW has come out with a new car

Comment: I wrote a paper for my Internal Combustion Engine class in 1979 about the conversion of auto engines to burn hydrogen. Not only is it an easy thing to do, there was a company doing it back then. The big issue was storage. A Nichel Cadmium Hydride was under test at the time. it could take hydrogen into solution by absorbing it and provide a low pressure form of storage that was not dangerously volatile as liquid Hydrogen. The problem is that it condenses out of solution at temperatures above 70F. With a sufficient capacity hydrogen generator, storage should not be a problem assuming there is a safe way to vent hydrogen when pressure
